Created in 1987, D'Jazz Nevers set itself the mission of spreading jazz and improvised music. It supports the creation and development of awareness and artistic education through three programs:
— The D'Jazz Nevers Festival is an intense week of jazz taking place every year around November 11 and attracts international artists and French and European music industry professionals.
— The D’Jazz Season Nevers Nièvre, a season of concerts between January and May in various locations around Nevers, Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire and in the department of La Nièvre.
Historic :It was in April 1987 when the first chords resonated at the ‘Rencontres internationales de Jazz’ in Nevers (Nevers Jazz Festival today). Those ten first concerts, organized by the ‘la Maison de la Culture’ in Nevers already displayed the tone of a festival focused primarily by the instinct of the discovery of a constantly changing music without denying the great figures who, from across the Atlantic, wrote the chapters in the history of jazz. This choice of language already marked a certain singularity in the approach: the refusal of a "festival catalog", that is to say, a series of concerts without coherence and willingness to enable exchanges and meetings between musicians and with the public.
The uniqueness and character of the jazz and contemporary improvised music scene in France and more widely in Europe will in time become its signature.
In 1988 the festival was made independent by the creation of the association D'Jazz Nevers. The new autumn programme (early November) offered presentations that sailed between ‘la Maison du Culture’ and the community theatre and which very quickly became a quintessential event of the music calendar.
The festival and its passionate supporters are led by professional "volunteers" including Roger Fontanel who as chairman, artistic and general manager, is spear-heading an expansion and emerging as an important component in the hexagonal landscape of the dissemination of this music.
Thanks to the dynamics of the creation of the Regional Centre of Jazz in Nevers, Bourgogne (Burgundy) in 2000, the team's professionalism continues.
From a simple five-day festival with two concerts per day, the project has evolved quite rapidly by offering more concerts over a longer period and by way of investing in the city, across different locations (Auditorium Jean-Jaurès, P.A.C. des Ouches, Café Charbon) which now have their own identities during the festival.
In 1995 the project evolved significantly and found its bearings with the creation of the season in Nevers and the Nièvre (Nevers Nièvre Jazz Season) offering regular musical events and also allowing the development of cultural activities and arts education throughout the whole region. This development is in line with the festival’s public partners and sponsors who have formalized their support in a multi-year agreement after positive evaluations of the objectives achieved so far.
Creating a ‘Sponsors Club’ in 2007 formalized already existing partnerships with companies throughout Nevers and Nièvre giving impetus and a new dynamism economically which benefits every aspect of the festival.
In 2010 ‘la Maison de la Culture’ invested totally in the festival following the closure of the community theatre.
So what next? Back to basics? A new start? Marked as the emblematic venue of the festival, the Theatre had naturally been a real icon of the programme. Yet this event brought a new level of focus towards the festival by ‘la Maison de la Culture’. Thanks to this new focus, the festival can now offer more adapted venues which allow a better experience of sharing between artists and the public. The enjoyment of the audience is now enhanced by virtue of greater visibility. The name change for D' Jazz Nevers Festival also reflects this renewed dynamism.
In 2012, D'Jazz Nevers set itself a new challenge: the creation of a jazz club (le Jazz-Club des Palais) in partnership with the city of Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, already a successful collaborator of the jazz season. This was a new venture which made the sharing of music and cultural collaboration more accessible for all. The ultimate ambition is to ensure an enduring and unique venue which continues to enrich music in La Nievre
As for the future, it is the prospect of a "place of musical fusion”, creation and diffusion to the public in Nevers shared with all the cultural participants of the Niévre that animates D'Jazz. The season has relinquished its itinerant status to become an ever increasingly popular perennial event.
